Forget Agents: Here's What's Great About x402
The best innovations often have a positioning problem in the beginning. x402 is one of them.
The x402 protocol, if you’ve never heard of it before, is a way for “AI agents to transact seamlessly”, in the words of the 3 guys from Coinbase that came up with it. The media calls it “the paywall handshake that let agents pay” and some see it as the key to an “automated, micro-level payments between AI systems and content providers.”
Who knows, right?
What’s clearly missing from this conversation, in no small part because everything seems to be about AI these days, is how any of this could be useful in the event that AI agents end up not being the majority of Internet ecommerce volume, and that people would prefer to click the buttons for free rather than for ChatGPT to do their bidding for a fee.
Fortunately, x402 doesn’t need AI agents to work. It’s just a handshake, an interaction between two entities under an agreed upon set of rules. The power of x402 isn’t that it allows non-humans to buy stuff online, is that it allows humans to buy stuff differently.
And that should’ve been the way x402 was positioned in the first place.
